When you make your website, there are a lot of software choices for you to use. But PHP has some of the strongest choices on the internet. Here are some of the PHP based softwares you should be aware of when you create your website. Chances are you’ll end up using at least one of them!
1.) WordPress. Wordpress is a PHP backed blogging system, one of the most popular on the internet. But it’s so much more than that. You can also create static pages using the WordPress backend. Once you get WordPress installed, its super easy to maintain. Anyone, with no programming knowledge at all, can use it. You just type into a box to make a page or post, it’s that simple. And the really awesome thing is the huge user contributed library of free templates and add ons to add style and features to your website. And since it’s such a familiar technology, its affordable to get paid services as well.
2.) Joomla. In my opinion, Joomla is one of the best content management systems out there. And did I mention, it’s FREE. Yes, like WordPress, Joomla is free software for managing your website. The templates in Joomla have a lot more flexibility. You don’t have one set page template. You can choose certain elements to have on every page (such as your header) and other elements to only include on some pages (perhaps your Twitter feed.) You can also move them around. Try out your navigation on the left… then try it on top, and move it back with a click of a button. To be honest, Joomla takes a little longer to really truly learn on the user end. You still don’t need to know any programming once it’s installed, but there is so much you can do it will take you awhile to really figure it all out. But it’s well worth it, I would highly recommend Joomla for your next big website.
3.) phpBB. Forums are one of the main ways people communicate with each other online, and phpBB is one of the best. Like our other softwares, phpBB is a free solution, but in my opinion it is more powerful than it’s paid counterparts. It comes with loads of features right “out of the box”, but like our other software, one of the most awesome things about it is the huge base of user contributed content and add ons. There is an add-on for just about anything you can imagine. Add that to a plethora of free templates and you have the recipe for a really awesome web community. One thing to keep in mind though, although you can auto install a lot of add ons, not all add ons play nice with one another. Always backup your work incase this happens. Knowing a little PHP is useful because you may have to manually edit some lines to make the add ons work well with each other.
Between these three pieces of software you can do almost anything with your website. You can even use them together, and style them to look alike. You can have a blog, a content packed website, and a booming forum community. What’s not to like? And the price is right, so you’re not out anything if you change your mind, just a few mins of installation time. So why not give one or all of these softwares a try with your next (or first) website. You won’t be disappointed.
